Bulahdelah Central School hosted a talk and presentation from Zacharia Machiek.
Zacharia is currently completing a 40 day walk down the North Coast of NSW to raise awareness and educate people about the plight of people in South Sudan.
His ultimate aim is to raise awareness about the harsh living conditions that still exist in South Sudan and attract support and sponsorship to build a primary school focusing on girls’ education in the village of Abyei Achok.
Zacharia is a former refugee and ‘Lost Boy’ from the region, who originally missed out on schooling during the prolonged conflict in his country and now wishes to ensure children from his village get the opportunity to attend school – something that we all take for granted here in Australia.

Hope Road is about hope and the role played by education in helping people on the journey to that place where their hopes may be fulfilled.
Zacharia’s motivation, in this regard, is to do whatever he can to alleviate the lack of educational facilities and opportunities in his former village, where at present children are having classes under the trees or not at all.
The rate of illiteracy for adults in South Sudan is among the highest in the world at about 74% with the rate of illiteracy for women and girls being even higher at about 83%.
