AFTER thirty fours of trading which commenced on 1 November 1980, Tea Gardens Hardware will close its doors at the end of this Saturday morning’s opening hours.
Interviewing David Bright in his office at the back of the hardware store, David told me that the building originally comprised a house at the rear with the hardware store out the front and that his office where we were sitting was once the kitchen.
In 1981 David opened a second hardware store in Hawks Nest in the building where So-Lo is now operating with the purpose of having the bigger slice of the market in both communities.
During 1985, the Tea Gardens site (including the house) was transformed into a full hardware store with David moving into the house at the back of the property which is where the Timber Shed is located today.
Tea Gardens Hardware Store has won numerous awards over the many years of trading with David fulfilling an Executive role with Thriftylink for twelve years and also National Chairman for three years from which he resigned in November 2013.
When Myall Coast News asked David about his life after the store closes, he said, “I want to feel what it is like not to be committed seven days a week.”
“Kim and I would like to do some travelling and Cape York is on the agenda and of course, I am looking forward to spending quality time with my grandson.”
David and Kim have developed an online business and David said that the best part about that business is that it can be done working from home.
