Police have been pleased with the attitude of motorcycle riders following an operation targeting the use of unregistered trail bikes in the Lake Macquarie area yesterday.
On Sunday 21 September 2014, a joint operation was conducted between police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command and the New South Wales Forest Corporation.
The operation was conducted between 6am and 6pm and focused on the areas of the Watagan State Forest near Mandalong and Watagans National Park near Martinsville to target the use of unregistered trail bikes.
Specialist police trail bike riders were used during the operation and conducted patrols of the main fire trails to detect those using unregistered trail bikes, unlicensed riders and the illegal dumping of rubbish.
In all, 12 vehicles were stopped and checks were conducted on all riders and drivers with every person found to be complying with all requirements of licensing and registration.
Lake Macquarie Local Area Commander, Superintendent Brett Greentree said he was pleased with the results and the fact that trail bike riders are beginning to take responsibility for their own safety.
“A number of these operations have been conducted in the last few months and the message is now getting through that the use of unregistered trail bikes by unlicensed riders will not be tolerated.
“It is pleasing to see riders finally taking some responsibility and abiding by the law but we will continue to conduct these operations to target that small element who make the sport unsafe for others.
“This is not about spoiling the rider’s fun but about making sure they conduct themselves in a safe and lawful manner,” Supt Greentree said.
