Great Lakes Council, with the help of 800 local school students, has produced an electronic 2015 calendar for free download from the Council website.
As part of Australia Day celebrations each year, Council runs an e-calendar competition for local primary school students.
“This year there were 800 entrants in the competition from 12 primary schools across the Great Lakes” said Mayor Cr Jan McWilliams.
The competition’s popularity has grown in the six years since it commenced, with approximately one third of all primary school students in the Great Lakes entering this competition each year.
This year’s theme was “The Anzac Spirit” to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915, with entrants submitting their drawing based on the theme.
The winners of the regional competition this year were:
Bridie Kauter 7 years, Nabiac Public School;
Shaun Carroll, 12-13 years, Holy Name School;
Gemma McEnallay, 9 years, Tuncurry Public School;
Bailey Middleton, 11 years, Bulahdelah Central School;
Lucy Hartman, 11 years, Holy Name School;
Ruby Machon, 5-6 years, Holy Name School;
Ava Rose Davies, 10 years, Forster Public School;
Alex Hinitt, 12 years, Tea Gardens Public School;
Sienna Jones, 11 years, Pacific Palms Public School;
Georgia Waters, 12 years, Booral Public School;
Sophia Hamblin, 8 years, Stroud Road Public School;
Skye Russell-Mather, 12 years, Pacific Palms Public School;
Elizabeth Wylie, 10 years, St Josephs School, Bulahdelah.
Council produces an e-calendar for every participating school based on the school’s selection of its best entries.
Schools can upload their calendars onto their own websites for free use by their school community.
Thirteen of those school winners are then selected to be included in the Great Lakes regional e-calendar which is available on Council’s website for free download by members of our community.
The winners are presented with awards during the Great Lakes Australia Day ceremony each year, and schools receive a book voucher for their Library.
