2014 Young Leadership Forum

 

MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead highly welcomed a number of respected leaders to Club Taree for the inaugural Myall Lakes Young Leadership Forum.

Guest speakers included Taree local and former NSW and Australian rugby league captain, Danny Buderus; Tanya Saad, local author of the book From the Feet Up; Adam Marshall MP, the youngest ever Member of the NSW Parliament; and Trish Bulic, the General Manager of Manning Base Hospital.

The Forum was moderated by another successful young local, Katrina Carlon from Old Bar who is a senior advisor to the Minister for Local Government.

More than sixty young people attended the Forum where the speakers led discussions and answered questions about their leadership experiences and the attributes each considered to be the essential ingredients of a good leader.

Stephen Bromhead said, the importance of leadership and how society develops its leaders, is generally little recognised.

“It is sometimes said that natural leaders are born and not created.

“Whilst that may be true for some, the need to recognise and develop leadership potential is vital in modern Australian society,” Mr Bromhead said.

“The aim of this Forum was to hear from people who are identified as leaders.

“Each speaker talked about the many forms of leadership they had encountered and that true leadership can be found in everyday life by how people go about their daily lives and the influences they have on those around them in subtle but important ways.

“Through these inspirational speakers, the Forum recognised that everyone has leadership potential in some area of their lives.”
Mr Bromhead said that he encourages all young people in the Myall Lakes region to consider taking on ‘leadership roles’ in their community.

“By taking up roles on local committees, including local sporting organisations, community groups like Lions, Rotary, school debating teams, Toastmasters, Chambers of Commerce or other local organisations,” he said.

“There are more than 400 of these organisations in the Great Lakes and Manning districts who have some great mentors to help young people discover and develop their leadership life skills.”
