Tea Gardens Hawks defeated East Maitland Griffins by 38 points to 28 at Maitland on Sunday.
In a re-scheduled match after elevation to “A” grade, the Hawks were unsure of their competition.
The Griffins opened the scoring early, with a try on the back of their visitors mistakes.
Recovering with converted tries to Brooke Roach, Trent, Murphy and Mikey Nanai Tea Gardens went into the break with a 24 to 12 lead.
Continuing with deft halves work from hooker Jack Beverley, and ½ back Jeff Wortley, the Hawks got out to a 34 point to 16 lead, before conceding, two tries against the run of play.
John Shultz scored a strong try late in the half to wrap up the game.
Best for the Hawks was Luke Gilbert who was awarded the “Stretch Player of the Round” points.
Best in defence was Trent Murphy, Brooke Roach won best attack award, scoring two tries, and having a hand in two others.
Jeff Wortley received the referees Best and Fairest prize.
Mikey Nanai returned strongly from a broken leg to win the supporters points.
Luke Gilbert was the teams “players player” in a no nonsense display.
The Hawks will play Shortland next Sunday 19 April 2015 at Myall Park. The game will kick off at 2:30.
Myall River Junior League will kick off on Saturday 18th.
The 7’s will travel to Valentine for a 9:40 kick off.
The 10’s game is yet to be confirmed.
12’s will play Raymond Terrace at Lakeside at 9am.
The 14’s have a bye in round one, while the 17’s will travel to Kotara for a 12:30 start.
