Throughout the days after the recent storm, Hugo and Jane Elstermann kept on going while all around many businesses were shut up tight.

Using a borrowed generator and some ‘Hurricane Lamps’ The Hawks Nest Convenience Store was a beacon to locals in need.
Without Eftpos Hugo kept a list of those who made purchases, and extended credit to those who couldn’t get out.
He then organised for fresh bread, milk and vegetables to be available for the almost week that Hawks Nest was without power and Coles was not open.
“There was a need and we just kept going as best we could,” said Hugo.
“It was a bit like the old days with staff showing people around with the old style Hurricane lamps as we didn’t have enough power for lighting.”
It just goes to show, the spirit of people in the local community to keep on going in times of need.
Hugo was thrilled that every person who he helped came back and fixed up their bill.
“It showed that no one was out to take advantage of anyone and all the locals were pitching in to help each other clean-up and get back on their feet.”
